Scenario Planner Guide: Compare Cold DM Plans Side by Side

The scenario planner exists because a single forecast hides risk. By comparing an optimistic, a planning, and a conservative case side by side, you see the range of outcomes and can decide which assumptions you are comfortable betting on. This guide covers building scenarios, comparing them, and using them to make a launch decision.

Build three scenarios

Create at least three: conservative (low rates), planning (median rates), and stretch (high rates). The gap between conservative and stretch is your risk band. A plan that only works in the stretch case is a bet, not a plan.

Make the launch decision

Inspect the band

Look at the distance between conservative and stretch clients.

Test the assumption

Identify which rate drives the biggest swing and validate it first.

Commit to planning case

Launch against the median, not the stretch.

Track which plays out

After 100 sends, see which scenario your real data matches.

If the conservative case still funds the campaign, you have a robust plan. If only the stretch case works, tighten targeting or rates before spending.

Frequently asked questions

How many scenarios should I build?

At least three: conservative, planning, and stretch. More than five usually adds noise without new insight. The goal is to see your risk band, not to model every possibility.

Which scenario should I launch against?

Launch against the planning (median) case and verify quickly with real data. If only the stretch case funds the work, fix the underlying rates or targeting first.

How do I know which scenario is right?

After roughly 100 sends per segment, your measured rates will reveal which scenario is playing out. Update the plan to match reality.
